Hack for iPad is released, based on the original 1.0.3

As requested by readers, this Hack prototype you might have glanced over a year ago on this blog is now cleaned up and got approved by Apple. It's now available on the app store. It's based on a BSD version of Hack 1.0.3 published by Andries Brouwer, which in turn is based on Jay Fenlason's Hack.

Please be aware that this is a very old game (originally published in 1985), lacking many of the refinements of the latest and greatest NetHack 3.4.3.

If that doesn't deter you from buying it, please make sure to let me know by mail or in the comments of any problems you encounter that are platform-related.

  1. Dirk, thank you so much for all of your work on getting these great RPG''s in to the portable world. One question: How do I change my name on Nethack HD for iPad? There isn't anything under Settings as with Slash 'Em on the iPhone. I would love to give my characters a name other than 'Mobile.' thanks again for all of these wonderful ports.

  2. Looks as if I forgot to include this in the rush to publish it in time for the iPad :(

  3. Oh, well. It still plays great. It's just nice to know that it wasn't the user...for once. Maybe one day you'll have the time to fix it. FYI: I would have paid for an iPad Nethack as solid as this one(minus the name factor) and would still gladly pay for an updated version as well as an iPad Slash 'EM. Anyways, thanks for the quick response and the games!
